On 6 January 2024, Patriarch Bartholomew received in his residence in Phanar a Greek gay politician, the president of SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance Stefanos Kasselakis, reports Romfea.

At the meeting, Kasselakis said, "I feel the responsibility we have as a State to promote Hellenism everywhere on earth".

He thanked Patriarch Bartholomew for "important initiatives in environmental, refugee and peace-related issues," expressed confidence that "the Ecumenical Patriarchate still has much to offer," and promised to support the Phanar "as much as we can".

In response, Patriarch Bartholomew expressed gratitude to Kasselakis "for his presence at the celebration of Epiphany and for the interest he shows in the ministry of the Mother Church".

On the eve of his meeting with Patriarch Bartholomew, Stefanos Kasselakis demanded on his Facebook that a law to legalise same-sex marriage in the country be introduced in the Greek Parliament.

Kasselakis is an open homosexual. Since 2019, he has been in a sexual relationship with American nurse Tyler McBeth, with whom he entered into a civil partnership.

As earlier reported, the head of the American Archdiocese of the Phanar baptised the children of a homosexual couple.
