President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a law ensuring a military burial ritual during an honourable burial at the National War Memorial Cemetery as reported on the website of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
The law stipulates that fallen heroes can be buried at the memorial cemetery with the appropriate ceremony starting this year (first phase).
The law also allows for the burial of police officers killed in the war at the memorial cemetery.
Additionally, the law provides for the creation of cenotaphs – symbolic tombstones without the actual burial of the body – on the grounds of the National Military Memorial Cemetery.
The military burial ritual includes a trumpeter, drummers and a salute team, as well as the unfurling of the State Flag over the grave and other ceremonial activities.
As previously reported, the Cabinet of Ministers approved two forms of headstones for the National Military Cemetery.
