The international lawyer for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Robert Amsterdam, congratulated Senator J.D. Vance on his election to the position of U.S. Vice President. In his message on the X social media platform, the lawyer highlighted Vance’s role in supporting religious freedoms and defending those persecuted in Ukraine.
"Congratulations to Vice President-elect @JDVance, one of the few US lawmakers to speak up on religious persecution in Ukraine," Amsterdam wrote. He also shared a repost of a video featuring letters from UOJ journalists who were imprisoned and had reached out to Vance.
The lawyer highlighted that international pressure helped secure their release on bail: "Reposting our video featuring letters written to Vance from imprisoned journalists, who have now been freed on bail thanks to international pressure."
As reported by the UOJ, on November 6, the Shevchenko District Court ruled to change the pretrial measures for two UOJ staff members, Valeriy Stupnytskyi and Andriy Ovcharenko. Granting the defense’s request, the judge allowed an alternative measure in the form of bail, set at 908,000 UAH for Andriy Ovcharenko and 908,400 UAH for Valeriy Stupnytskyi.
