Interparliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy starts in Corfu

On December 10-11, a meeting of the International Secretariat of the Interparliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy will be held on the island of Corfu (Greece).

The meeting is timed to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution, which brought part of Greece freedom from the Ottoman rule. The meeting is attended by representatives of Russia, Greece, Serbia, Romania, Albania, Cyprus, Egypt, Armenia, Syria and Jordan.
It is expected that the work of the International Secretariat on December 10 and 11 will focus on the report on the activities of the institution on such issues as the progress of the dialogue on the future of Europe and the protection of its Christian principles, the protection of human rights, the protection of Christians in the Middle East from religious intolerance, the promotion of dialogue between representatives of different religions for the purpose of peace and cooperation, discussion of the issue of converting Hagia Sophia into a mosque by the Turkish authorities.
During the stay of the delegations of Orthodox deputies in Corfu, a memorial event will be held with a memorial prayer, an honorary report and the laying of wreaths at the grave of Ioannis Kapodistrias in the monastery of the Most Holy Theotokos Platitera.
Finally, members of the International Secretariat participating in the celebrations in honor of the island's patron saint will attend a bishop's evening at the Holy Temple of Saint Spyridon.
The Interparliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy is an international interparliamentary institution that was originally created in 1994 as the European Interparliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy.
In 2018, in Athens, the Interparliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy condemned schisms.
