As they prepare to elect a new pope, the cardinals have issued an appeal for peace to all countries engaged in war.

The cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church, gathered for the final general assembly before the upcoming conclave to elect the new pope, addressed an appeal to all parties involved in armed conflicts, particularly in Ukraine. According to the Vatican Press Office, in their statement dated May 6, 2025, the cardinals called for a permanent ceasefire and the immediate start of peace negotiations.

The cardinals noted that, regrettably, there has been “no progress has been made in promoting the peace processes in Ukraine, in the Middle East, and in many other parts of the world.” They pointed out that, on the contrary, “attacks have intensified, especially against the civilian population,” and directed their appeal to all parties involved.

The cardinals made a heartfelt appeal to all parties involved “to reach a permanent ceasefire as soon as possible and to negotiate, without preconditions or further delay, the peace long desired by the populations involved and by the entire world”.

The cardinals concluded their message with an invitation “all the faithful to intensify their prayers to the Lord for a just and lasting peace”.

As reported by the UOJ, all cardinals have arrived in Rome ahead of the conclave to elect the new pope.
