WHO says sex is not limited to male or female

The WHO will introduce updates to its gender mainstreaming manual, where it recognises the possibility of a third gender, says an official statement on the WHO website, " sex is not limited to male or female".

The WHO, as a specialised UN agency, attributes its decision to the increased use of the gender-neutral term not only in social and public life but also in the health care of many countries.

“Going beyond binary approaches to gender and health to recognize gender and sexual diversity, or the concepts that gender identity exists on a continuum and that sex is not limited to male or female," reads the WHO’s statement.

The changes will affect the WHO gender manual published in 2011, which is used in health care.
