English Prince supports Archbishopess after scandal during her appointment

On February 5, 2026, in London, Prince William and Kate Middleton met with the new Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullally. The meeting became a public gesture of support for the new head of the Church of England after the scandal that accompanied her appointment, reports People agency.
The Prince and Princess of Wales received Sarah Mullally as the first woman in history to head the Anglican Church. Her appointment took place in autumn 2025 upon approval by King Charles III and attracted heightened public attention.
According to People, Prince William congratulated Mullally on taking office and noted the significance of the meeting that took place. "For Catherine and me, faith is very important, and we would like to build strong and constructive working relations with you," he stated during the conversation.
The resignation of the previous Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby followed amid sharp criticism regarding how the church leadership responded to the scandal involving sexual abuse of children.
Before the meeting with the Prince and Princess of Wales, Sarah Mullally had already been received by King Charles III. During the audience, she took an oath of allegiance to the monarch as the supreme governor of the Church of England. It is expected that the official inauguration ceremony of the archbishop will take place in spring.
