An interactive AR model of the St. Charalambos Convent in Hamaliivka, part of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church’s Konotop Eparchy, is planned for Ukraine’s Sumy region, Hlukhiv.City reports.
The monastic complex will be recreated as it appeared more than 200 years ago – in the 18th century. Specialists have already produced three 3D models of the monastery’s buildings and now plan to add its historic monastic cells and combine the structures into an interactive augmented reality scene.
The monastery’s St. Charalambos Church contains Ukraine’s only burial vault of Ukrainian hetmans – members of the Skoropadsky family. The digital model will allow visitors to see the monastery’s historical appearance and examine its architecture in detail.
The work is being carried out as part of the project Hlukhiv Region Through the Centuries: A Digital Collection of Historical and Architectural Monuments. A total of 15 sites in the Hlukhiv region are to be digitized using 3D laser scanning, while five lost structures will be reconstructed from archival photographs, drawings, and other historical materials.
The digital collection will also include the Ascension Church in Hlukhiv, St. Nicholas Church in Poloshky, the Church of the Archangel Michael and the Transfiguration Church in Voronezh, as well as other regional landmarks. The project is being implemented by Oleksandr Dovzhenko Hlukhiv National Pedagogical University with support from the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation.
As the UOJ reported earlier, a new chapel was consecrated in Hlukhiv.
