Head of the UGCC Svyatoslav Shevchuk held a service for the "martyr of unity" Josaphat Kuntsevich on the altar of confession in the Vatican basilica, reports Vatican Radio.

Svyatoslav Shevchuk stated that the Eastern Catholic Churches have a special mission: to promote unity among all believers in Christ. "All Christians," he said, "should pray, work and, if necessary, even die for the restoration of the visible and complete unity of the Church of Christ".

Archbishop Josaphat Kuntsevich (1580 -1623) a Polish-Lithuanian monk and archbishop of the Ruthenian Uniate Church, Archbishop of Polotsk. He was ill-famous for the exceptional cruelty, with which he forcibly planted the Union of Brest in the territory of present-day Belarus, and the activities to close Orthodox churches.
