UOC Primate takes part in commemoration of Holodomor victims in Kiev
His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry took part in the state ceremony commemorating the victims of the Holodomor of 1932-1933.
On November 23, 2019, a state ceremony commemorating the victims of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 was held on the territory of the National Museum “Memorial to the Victims of Holodomor in Ukraine”, reports the Information and Education Department of the UOC.
The event was attended by the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine, the UOC Chancellor, Metropolitan Anthony of Borispol and Brovary, Bishop Viktor of Baryshevka, Bishop Silvester of Belgorod, Bishop Dionysius of Pereyaslav-Khmelnitsky.
The ceremony was led by President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky. The event was attended by representatives of the government and the diplomatic corps, religious leaders of various faiths and public figures.
The President announced a nationwide minute of silence and the “Light a Candle” action. Vladimir and Elena Zelensky laid compositions with grain and lighted lamps to the sculpture "Bitter Memory of Childhood".
Those present paid tribute to the victims of the famine of 1932-1933.
Commemoration of the Holodomor victims is annually celebrated on the fourth Saturday of November. In 2019, this is November 23. This year marks the 86th anniversary of the tragic events.
