Metropolitan Nektarios of Corfu: Conscience is the unwritten law of God
Metropolitan Nektarios emphasized that man belongs to God and should not reject the Incarnate Word, succumbing to temptations and evil.
On March 5, 2025, Metropolitan Nektarios of Corfu of the Church of Greece reminded believers that conscience is the unwritten Law of God.
During the first Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts of Great Lent at the Church of Saint Spyridon on the island of Corfu, Metropolitan Nektarios addressed the faithful, referring to the Book of Proverbs and a passage read during the evening service: “The ways of the wicked shall perish from the earth, and the lawless shall be no more.”
He emphasized that there is a Law of God that expresses His love for humanity. According to the Metropolitan, when a person distances themselves from God’s love, they lose their spiritual foundation, replacing it with malice, aggression, and hatred – both toward God and their neighbors. This, he warned, leads to the destruction of the soul.
"Fasting helps purify the heart, lighten the conscience, and make it clearer," the hierarch noted. "Conscience is the unwritten Law of God that guides us in life. If we act against our conscience, we reject the Creator, Who cares for us, and thereby condemn ourselves to spiritual ruin."
Metropolitan Nektarios stressed that man belongs to God and should not turn away from the Incarnate Word, falling into temptations and evil. He called on the faithful to engage in spiritual struggle for the sake of transformation and holiness, noting that the path of humility and virtue leads to the Kingdom of God.
At the conclusion of the Liturgy, Metropolitan Nektarios wished that Great Lent would be a time of spiritual enlightenment.
