Britain: Teacher fired for saying England is a Christian country
A teacher in London has been dismissed after a pupil complained about his comment that England is a Christian country; the case escalated to a police inquiry and a child-protection review.
On December 8, 2025, it became known that a teacher at a London primary school had been suspended after a Muslim pupil complained about the teacher’s remark that the United Kingdom is a Christian country, The Telegraph reported.
According to the outlet, the teacher was referred to the local child-protection board and temporarily barred from working with pupils. The suspension was triggered by comments addressed to a Muslim child, as well as concerns the teacher raised about a group of pupils washing their feet in the school bathroom sinks. A senior detective with the Metropolitan Police, responsible for investigating potential harm to children, was also brought into the inquiry.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns among free-speech advocates, who see in such cases an attempt to use child-protection mechanisms to pressure people with conservative views. The teacher, whose name has not been disclosed, denied the accusations and explained that he merely reminded the children of British values and the fact that Anglicanism is the country’s established religion, with the King serving as Supreme Governor of the Church of England.
The case also includes additional complaints: three pupils claimed they were frightened by the teacher’s behavior. After an internal investigation, the school dismissed him and forwarded the materials to both the police and the child-protection board. The police later closed the case, yet a ban on working with children was still imposed – a decision the teacher eventually managed to overturn.
The Free Speech Union, which supported the suspended teacher, stated that the situation demonstrated a disproportionate response by the authorities. According to the Union’s director, Lord Young, the teacher had effectively faced professional exile for voicing an obvious fact about the status of Anglicanism in Britain. The teacher is now working part-time at another school outside London.
