Anniversary of UGCC creation to be included in 2026 commemorative dates
A Verkhovna Rada committee has recommended adding the anniversary of the Union of Brest to the calendar of jubilees.
The Verkhovna Rada Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy has instructed that the draft Resolution on the celebration of commemorative dates and jubilees in 2026 include the 430th anniversary of the conclusion of the Union of Brest. This was reported by Sudebno-Yuridicheskaya Gazeta.
The committee meeting took place on December 1, 2025. As stated in the explanatory note to the document, “the adoption of the resolution should make it possible to organize events in advance, use state funds more efficiently, and reduce the number of separate draft resolutions devoted to individual anniversaries.”
The list of commemorative dates and jubilees for 2026 is proposed to be supplemented with the 430th anniversary of the conclusion of the Union of Brest – the creation of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
At the same time, the committee proposed excluding from the list of commemorative dates the 970th anniversary of the birth of Nestor the Chronicler.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that a former cleric of Dumenko had stated that the future of the OCU could lie in unification with the Uniates.
