World Council of Churches criticizes U.S. for Maduro kidnapping
The WCC called Washington’s actions in Venezuela a flagrant violation of international law and a dangerous precedent.
The World Council of Churches (WCC) issued a sharp condemnation of US military actions in Venezuela and the seizure of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. The statement was published by WCC General Secretary Jerry Pillay.
“The attacks carried out by the United States of America in Venezuela, as well as the seizure and detention of President Maduro and his wife, are a flagrant violation of international law,” the statement says. “These actions create a dangerous precedent for those who seek to cast aside all restraints on the use of armed aggression and brute force to achieve political goals.”
The WCC called for an immediate halt to such attacks, respect for the principles of international law and state sovereignty, and the resolution of disputes through dialogue and diplomacy rather than armed violence. The Council also appealed to the United Nations and the Organization of American States to take urgent measures to ensure that all members comply with the relevant charters and conventions.
“In these dangerous and uncertain times, the world needs wise and courageous leaders for peace, not the spread of conflicts and the normalization of international lawlessness, which risks an even deeper plunge into chaos,” the document emphasizes. “We pray that wisdom and peace will prevail in this context and in other parts of the world.”
Earlier, the UOJ reported that the World Council of Churches had expressed concern over a law that threatens to ban the UOC.
