The UOC convent in Baturyn may lose the right to use the complex once the agreement with the Ministry of Culture expires.

On January 18, 2026, it became known that the term of the agreement on free-of-charge use of the Baturyn St. Nicholas–Krupytsia Convent, concluded between the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, expires on January 26, 2026. The relevant information was published by the Interfax–Ukraine news agency.

According to the report, the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine announced the end of the agreement with the community of the St. Nicholas Krupytsia Convent of the UOC concerning use of the complex of architectural monuments of the Baturyn St. Nicholas–Krupytsia Monastery in Chernihiv Region.

The ministry clarified that the site is state property and falls within the ministry’s sphere of management. In 2026, the terms of a number of similar free-of-charge use agreements with religious communities are expiring, including the agreement with the said monastery.

The monastery complex includes bell towers, the warm Church of the Transfiguration, and monastic cells with a refectory, located in the village of Verbivka at 33a Shevchenko Street. The complex is on the balance sheet of the National Historical and Cultural Preserve “Hetman’s Capital.”

According to the ministry, the agreement expires on January 26, 2026, after which the issue of the monastery complex’s further use must be resolved in accordance with the procedure established by law.

Earlier, the UOJ reported that DESS described the transfer of Kyiv’s St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church to the Catholic community as a “restoration of historical justice.”
