New York's Mayor opens clinics with access to abortions and gender transition
New York City Mayor allocated $4 million to create medical centers for youth with access to abortions and gender transition.
On January 22, 2026, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the creation of two municipal medical centers for youth aged 16 to 25, which will provide medical care, including abortions and services related to gender transition, as reported on the New York City Hall website.
The new facilities will open in Brooklyn and Queens. According to the New York City Hall website, $4 million has been allocated for launching the centers.
The list of services includes “reproductive care” – a term that in the U.S. typically covers abortions, contraception, and medical procedures related to gender transition. At the same time, the city administration does not disclose details about the specific nature of the interventions provided.
Previously, Zohran Mamdani has repeatedly stated his full support for abortion on demand and his intention to turn New York into a sanctuary for such practices, which are prohibited in several American states.
Additionally, the mayor promised to pressure private medical institutions that refuse to perform gender transition surgeries. Mamdani insists on expanding municipal funding for abortions, which, according to critics, displaces alternative forms of support for motherhood and protection of unborn children's lives.
