MP: Either we defend LGBT rights, or we will become like Georgia
Inna Sovsun called for supporting the rights of homosexuals so that Ukraine does not follow Georgia’s path.
Member of Parliament Inna Sovsun warned that Ukraine risks taking Georgia’s undemocratic path if it does not immediately move to defend LGBT rights.
She said that the draft of the new Civil Code changes the current provision and, under it, only opposite-sex couples can be recognized as a family. In Sovsun’s view, this is an alarming sign that contradicts the EU’s position: “And all this is happening in conditions where the European Union has the opposite requirement – to provide an adequate way to recognize same-sex families (and, by the way, the deadline for meeting this requirement has already passed).”
According to Sovsun, such a shift toward “traditional values” is “no small matter – it is about a civilizational choice.”
She cited Georgia as a negative example, saying that “the turn away from the European course there also began with restricting the rights of LGBT people.”
Sovsun said she discussed the issue with Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk, who is the main initiator of the new Civil Code.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that Sovsun has been telling audiences abroad that the UOC is not a Church but a KGB branch.
