Great schema tonsure performed at Annunciation St. Anna Convent in Vashkivtsi
The Great Schema tonsure of a 90-year-old nun in Vashkivtsi was performed by her son, Metropolitan Roman of Konotop and Hlukhiv.
On February 2, 2026, at the women’s monastery of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church dedicated to Saint Righteous Anna on Anna’s Hill in the city of Vashkivtsi, Vyzhnytsia district, Chernivtsi region, Metropolitan Roman (Kimovych) performed the Great Schema tonsure of his mother, Nun Agnia. This was reported by the press service of the Konotop Eparchy.
In the tonsure, the schema-nun received a new name – Anna – in honor of Saint Anna the Prophetess.
After the rite, Metropolitan Roman delivered a sermon in which he spoke about the meaning of the renewed spiritual path for the newly tonsured sister.
At the conclusion, Metropolitan Roman congratulated Schema-nun Anna on her 90th birthday and asked her to continue offering intensified prayers for her children and relatives.
According to tradition, everyone present congratulated the newly tonsured sister on receiving the Great Angelic Habit.
Schema-nun Anna (Kimovych) gave birth to and raised eight children, among them a metropolitan, two priests, and a nun. A year after the death of her husband Dmytro, she entered the women’s monastery dedicated to Saint Righteous Anna, where she later took monastic vows.
The Great Schema is the highest degree of monasticism. It is received by monks and nuns who have carried out their monastic labor in the monastery for a long time and have extensive experience of spiritual life, along with a desire for even stricter fasting and prayer. Those who take the Schema devote all their time to intensified prayer for the whole world.
Before the tonsure, with the blessing of Metropolitan Meletiy of Chernivtsi and Bukovyna, the hierarch celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the monastery.
As the UOJ previously reported, a cross procession took place in Bukovyna to Vashkivtsi, to the Monastery of Saint Righteous Anna.
