Lviv city authorities announced plans to build a cathedra church of an OCU eparchy on the site where a UOC church previously stood.

On February 13, 2026, during a meeting of the executive committee of the Lviv City Council, officials announced their intention to build a so-called “Sykhiv Living Room” – a multifunctional public facility – as well as a new church nearby, according to Yevhen Boiko, head of the executive committee, in a comment to the outlet Tvoye Misto.

According to Boiko, the project concerns the construction of an Orthodox cathedra church of the Lviv–Sokal Eparchy of the OCU. It is planned to be built on the plot where the Church of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Volodymyr the Great is currently located (89 Chervona Kalyna Ave.).

Boiko recalled that until April 2023 the site had contained a small chapel of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which the city authorities dismantled as “illegal.” At present, the plot has been registered to an OCU community and is being considered by it as the site for building the cathedra cathedral of the Lviv–Sokal Eparchy.

Earlier, the UOJ reported that on August 23, 2023, the Lviv City Council approved – without discussion – a land-use project and granted a 0.764-hectare plot on Chervona Kalyna Avenue for perpetual use by an OCU parish for the construction of the Transfiguration Cathedra Cathedral. The UOC’s Volodymyr church was demolished by excavators on April 6, 2023, by decision of the city authorities. According to the rector, Archpriest Volodymyr Kuzo, the community had held the plot on legal grounds since 1991, and the church had repeatedly been subjected to attempted arson and demolition.
