Ukraine loses more than a million people annually, head of Institute for Demography
The demographer explained that the combination of migration and natural mortality leads to a loss of about 1.15 million citizens per year.
Demographics of Ukraine shows the lowest indicators in recent decades. This is reported by TSN citing Oleksandr Hladun, Deputy Director of the Mykhailo Ptoukha Institute for Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
According to Oleksandr Hladun's assessment, the country loses approximately 1 million 150 thousand people annually.
This figure consists of natural population decline (about 320 thousand people per year) and migration losses reaching approximately 830 thousand. The demographer noted that the data concerns only territories controlled by Kyiv, whose borders have changed during the conflict.
Mortality is approximately three times higher than birth rate: about 505 thousand people die annually, while no more than 185 thousand children are born.
At the same time, a significant portion of citizens leave the country, especially to European Union countries. The expert added that not all flows are accounted for by official statistics, since many crossed the border without registration or remained in temporarily occupied territories.
As the UOJ reported, during the war, Ukraine's population has decreased by 10 million.
