82-year-old UGCC nun killed in Brazil
In Brazil’s state of Paraná, a man broke into a UGCC convent and killed 82-year-old Sister Nadiia Havanska. The tragedy has stirred the Ukrainian community.
On February 24, 2026, in the town of Ivaí (Paraná State, Brazil), an 82-year-old nun of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Sister Nadiia Havanska, was killed at a convent. The tragedy was reported by CREDO, citing police sources.
According to law enforcement, the woman was in the courtyard of the monastery feeding chickens when a 33-year-old man entered the premises. He attacked the nun and then fled. A witness called the police, and the suspect was soon detained. The man confessed to the crime; investigators are classifying the case as murder with aggravating circumstances.
The crime has caused an outcry among the Ukrainian community in Paraná and local residents. During the transport of the detained suspect, some people attempted to carry out vigilante justice, but police prevented the incident.
Sister Nadiia belonged to the Congregation of the Sisters Servants of the Immaculate Virgin Mary of the UGCC and had served at the convent for many years. Church representatives expressed condolences and called for prayers for the deceased.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that in India, a family of three was killed for converting to Christianity.
