President of Georgia: Patriarch Ilia was a pillar of support for the nation
Georgia’s president said Patriarch Ilia II left an indelible mark on history and will forever remain a spiritual pillar for the Georgian people.
On March 18, 2026, Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili published a message of condolence following the death of Patriarch Ilia II of All Georgia.
“The death of His Holiness Ilia II, Patriarch of Georgia, has caused immense pain to each of us. His contribution to strengthening and restoring our Mother Church is beyond price,” Kavelashvili said.
The head of state said the primate’s half-century of service was “epoch-defining” and would remain a lasting example of devotion to the homeland and the people. “His wisdom and love will leave a deep imprint on each of our hearts,” the president wrote.
According to Kavelashvili, the Patriarch devoted himself selflessly to Georgia for decades and was “a firm support for our people.” “We will all deeply miss the Patriarch’s wisdom and his fatherly love,” he added.
The president also expressed condolences to the entire country. “Once again, I extend my condolences to all of Georgia over this great loss and wish God’s help and spiritual strength to the Patriarch’s family, the clergy, and the faithful in this difficult moment,” Mikheil Kavelashvili said in conclusion.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that Georgia had declared March 18 a day of mourning for Patriarch Ilia II.
