The court lifted the preventive measure against the head of the Aragatsotn Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

In Armenia, a court on March 17, 2026, decided to release the head of the Aragatsotn Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Bishop Mkrtich Proshyan, from house arrest, reports News.am publication.

According to the court's decision, the bishop has been imposed administrative supervision. He is prohibited from visiting the diocese and communicating with witnesses in the case.

It is noted that Bishop Mkrtich Proshyan has been in custody since October 16, after which the preventive measure was changed to house arrest. Now the court has decided to release him while maintaining a number of restrictions.

The hierarch is charged under two articles related to alleged obstruction of electoral rights using his official position, as well as coercion to participate in meetings using his authority.

The victims in the case are former clergy members – Aramais Takhmazyan and Stepan Asatryan, who were previously defrocked.

As the UOJ wrote, earlier the Yerevan Court of Appeals released Archbishop Mikael Adjapakhyan from custody, applying house arrest and a written undertaking not to leave as a preventive measure.
