Orthodox bishops of Britain issue statement against abortion
Orthodox bishops of Great Britain have called for preventing the lifting of restrictions on abortions and emphasized that a baby in the womb is a human life.
In light of the upcoming debate on the Crime and Policing Bill in the United Kingdom, Orthodox Bishops serving in the UK issued a letter protesting the provision allowing abortion up to birth, reports Orthodox Times.
In the letter, the bishops emphasized that "a baby in the mother's womb is a human being, deserving love, care and protection," adding that "the mother also deserves love, care, protection and the active support of those around her, especially when she has become pregnant in difficult circumstances."
The bishops pointed to the inadmissibility of double standards, stating that "to acknowledge the humanity of a baby if he or she is wanted, but to deny this if he or she is unwanted makes no sense." They expressed concern that the proposed amendments could remove legal restrictions on abortion "at any stage of pregnancy, for any reason, ... right up to birth."
Addressing members of the House of Lords, the bishops declared: "We, Orthodox Christian bishops serving in the United Kingdom, call o Their Lordships to affirm the reality that a baby in the womb is a human life to be protected, and that women deserve better than self-administered abortions up to birth."
In conclusion, the bishops noted that "abortion up to birth is not a choice but a death," and called for support of an amendment to exclude the corresponding provision from the bill.
