In Ukraine, priests will be granted the right to officially register marriage
The innovation will become an additional convenient tool that is in demand in frontline zones.
In Ukraine, a reform of civil legislation is being prepared, according to which authorized clergy of officially registered religious organizations will receive the right to perform state registration of marriage. This is reported by "Judicial and Legal Gazette".
The corresponding provisions were discussed by representatives of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and members of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Legal Policy during work on the draft of the new Civil Code.
The new mechanism assumes that after performing the sacrament, the priest will enter the necessary information into the State Register of Civil Status Acts. The State Service for Ethnopolitics and Freedom of Conscience has already supported this initiative, noting that such practice of religious marriage registration successfully operates in many countries of the world.
Officials believe that such a form will be especially in demand in frontline settlements, where the church remains one of the few stably functioning institutions.
Discussion participants also confirmed the preservation in the new code of the fundamental norm that marriage is a union exclusively between a woman and a man. Experts emphasize that the innovation will not replace the existing system, but will become an additional convenient tool for believing citizens.
