Zelensky promised to restore the damaged Dormition Cathedral of the Lavra
Zelensky inspected the damaged shrine and ordered funds to be allocated from the Reserve Fund for the immediate preservation of the monastery's main church.
On June 15, 2026, President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, where he inspected the damage and assured that all damaged structures would be fully restored. The head of state, together with representatives of the Cabinet of Ministers and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, documented the aftermath of an aerial attack that caused a fire on the roof of the Dormition Cathedral. This was reported by Ukrinform.
The government will allocate "fast money" from the Reserve Fund to carry out urgent preservation works on the building. According to the President, specialized experts will first conduct an assessment and evaluate the extent of the damage, after which a full-scale restoration will begin. "The main thing is to preserve what we have, and then restoration work will follow," Zelensky emphasized. Oversight of the process was assigned to Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko.
The President called the strike on the Lavra "barbarism" and an open attack on Christianity and the cultural heritage of all humanity. He urged the international community not to remain silent in response to strikes on the Orthodox shrine and stressed that no justification can exist for such actions.
As reported by SPZh, the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra caught fire as a result of a Russian Federation attack.
