Mob attacks Christians during Sunday service in India
Radicals in the state of Chhattisgarh beat dozens of believers for refusing to renounce Christ.
On June 17, 2026, human rights advocates reported a brutal attack on a Christian community in the village of Sadrapal, India. According to the organization CSW, around 100 local residents surrounded a building where 60 believers had gathered for a Sunday worship service.
The radicals demanded that those present immediately renounce their faith. When the Christians firmly refused, the attackers began beating them. Among those injured were children and a pregnant woman.
Despite suffering serious injuries, the victims encountered what rights advocates described as the authorities’ indifference. A local government hospital initially refused to provide medical treatment to the wounded. Medical staff justified the refusal by citing the absence of an official First Information Report (FIR), while police allegedly failed to register a complaint against the radicals for a week.
Only after the case was officially registered on June 5 were the most seriously injured victims transferred to a private hospital for treatment. Law enforcement officers detained 12 of the attackers, but all of them were released three days later.
“CSW is deeply concerned by this latest attack on Christians in Chhattisgarh, and particularly by claims that the hospital initially denied treatment to those who urgently needed it,” said CSW's Director of Advocacy Anna Lee Stangl.
She called on state authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and bring all those responsible to justice, stressing that local law enforcement "must take immediate measures to ensure that the Christians who will be directly affected are guaranteed protection."
