Participants in the gay pride parade demanded recognition of same-sex cohabitation and the removal from the new Civil Code of the definition of family as a union between a man and a woman.

On June 21, 2026, representatives of the LGBT community gathered in the capital under the slogan “Our Families Are Part of Ukraine.” Because of the march, law enforcement officers completely blocked the city center from early morning. The main group of activists gathered near Taras Shevchenko Park, Radio Liberty reports.

At the same time, a rally of supporters of traditional values was held on Khreshchatyk to mark Father’s Day. Participants in the event spoke out in defense of the natural Ukrainian family. They recalled that the natural order of things is for children to have a father and a mother, not “pseudoscientific fabrications” about “two fathers.” Police set up barriers and kept the participants of the two events in different locations to prevent clashes.

Participants in the LGBT march appealed to Verkhovna Rada deputies, demanding changes to the draft of the new Civil Code. They were outraged that, in the current version of the document, family is defined exclusively as marriage between a man and a woman.

The activists also insist on the registration of same-sex partnerships. Despite protests from supporters of traditional values, the anniversary march ended under the protection of security forces.

As the UOJ reported, Kyiv authorities announced transport restrictions due to the gay pride parade.
