UK Catholic school bans teache over criticism of LGBT ideology

A Catholic school barred a teacher from the profession after he described LGBT people as “mentally ill.”

In the United Kingdom, teacher William Garwood has been prohibited from teaching after making remarks critical of LGBT ideology, according to the Daily Mail.

The Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) banned the 60-year-old educator from the teaching profession for six years over comments he made about homosexuals and transgender people.

The incident occurred at St. Mary’s Catholic Academy in West Yorkshire just three days after Garwood began working there. During a history lesson for Year 11 students, he told pupils that he regarded people with same-sex attraction as “mentally ill.”

Garwood also claimed that billionaires were behind the promotion of transgender ideology and were using the media to influence public opinion.

During the investigation, Garwood defended his right to hold religious beliefs. The Muslim teacher argued that his views were consistent with Islamic teaching and with what he described as “traditional British values.”

He accused the regulatory body of responding politically to his remarks and characterized the proceedings as an attempt at emotional manipulation.

The disciplinary panel concluded that the teacher’s comments were “clearly inappropriate” and "significantly outside the bounds of acceptable teaching practice." The panel found that such statements were discriminatory in a school environment and could have a harmful impact on children.

According to the TRA’s ruling, Garwood’s conduct went well beyond the boundaries of acceptable professional practice.

As a result, William Garwood has been barred from returning to teaching until at least June 2032. After that date, he will be eligible to apply for the prohibition order to be reviewed, but until then the ban will remain in force.

As the UOJ reported, Britain barred a Finnish lawmaker known for opposing LGBT ideology from transiting through the country.
