The Pope’s special envoy was shown the conditions in which Russian prisoners of war are being held in Kyiv.

The Vatican sent its special envoy, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, to Kyiv, where he was shown a camp housing Russian prisoners of war. The visit was reported by Ukraine’s ambassador to the Holy See, Andriy Yurash.

According to Yurash, the visit demonstrates Ukraine’s openness to dialogue and its compliance with international norms. He also stated that the camp meets all international standards and is open to inspections by monitoring missions.

Yurash added that Cardinal Zuppi listened attentively to prisoners who wished to speak with him and share their experiences and suffering.

As the UOJ previously reported, the Vatican rejected accusations by the Russian Orthodox Church that it lacks neutrality regarding the war in Ukraine.
