Mount Athos deploys drones to help prevent wildfires
The use of drones has reduced response times to fires amid abnormally high temperatures.
The monasteries of Athos have introduced a territory monitoring system using unmanned aerial vehicles to combat forest fires. The use of technology has reduced response times to emergencies. This is reported by the Union of Orthodox Journalists in Greece.
Ahead of the summer season, fire protection on Athos has been strengthened due to abnormally high temperatures and dense vegetation. Fire service commander Vasileios Psaltidis reported that preparations began in spring with inspections of forest roads and water supply systems. Each monastery now independently patrols and maintains its own territory.
The Vatopedi Monastery has organized round-the-clock forest surveillance using a private drone. A drone readiness base has also been established on the Holy Mountain at the skete of Saint Demetrius. The Hilandar Monastery will have a video camera and three smoke detectors installed. A volunteer fire brigade of 23 people has been operating at the Vatopedi Monastery since last year and has already completed the necessary drills.
From May 1 to October 31, open fires are prohibited on Athos. A corresponding announcement is made in five languages for all pilgrims arriving on the peninsula by sea. In addition to firefighting, rescue workers on Athos also assist guests making the ascent to the mountain's summit.
As the Union of Orthodox Journalists previously reported, Greece has allocated 5.3 million euros for the restoration of Athos monasteries.
