The Ministry of Justice clarified which state bodies are authorized to register religious communities, monasteries, missions, and theological educational institutions.

On July 24, 2026, the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine sent a letter to interregional departments requiring compliance with the legally established distribution of powers in the registration of religious organizations, reports the "Judicial and Legal Gazette."

The department reminded that state registration depends on the type of religious organization. Religious centers, administrations, monasteries, brotherhoods, missions, and theological educational institutions are registered by the central executive body responsible for state policy in the sphere of religion.

The registration of religious communities is handled by the Council of Ministers of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, regional state administrations, as well as the Kyiv and Sevastopol city state administrations.

The Ministry of Justice emphasized that violation of the established distribution of powers may lead to non-compliance with the procedure for state registration. Interregional departments were instructed to bring the clarifications to the attention of state registrars and notaries, and to carry out additional work on the application of legislation.

Previously, the Union of Orthodox Journalists reported that the Minister of Culture of Ukraine called the restoration of Ukrainian cultural heritage a common cause of the state, business, and society.
