In Ivano-Frankivsk, a square was opened on the site of a demolished UOC church
In Ivano-Frankivsk, instead of the promised kindergarten and school, a square was opened more than four years after the demolition of the UOC church.
On August 1, 2026, a square was opened in Ivano-Frankivsk, built on the site of the demolished Transfiguration church of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church at 6 Vyacheslav Chornovil Street, reports ZAXID.NET.
A children's playground, benches, waste bins, and surveillance cameras were installed on the territory. The maintenance of the new public area will be handled by employees of a municipal enterprise. The cost of the works amounted to 5.7 million hryvnias.
Some residents criticized the project due to the lack of shade and the large number of open paved areas. In the comments, the square was called a «frying pan under the blazing sun» and a «solarium saturated with exhaust fumes.» Residents noted that the planted trees would only be able to provide full shade in 10–15 years.
Martsinkiv stated that a sufficient number of trees had been planted on the territory, and that shrubs could additionally be planted there in autumn. According to him, in one to two years the plants will grow and the appearance of the square will change.
The UOC Transfiguration church had been located at this address since 2006 and was demolished by city authorities in February 2022. At the time, the clearing of the site was explained by the need to restore a kindergarten; later, the city administration announced plans to build a primary school there. However, neither of these projects was realized, and more than four years after the demolition of the church, a square was opened in its place.
The UOJ previously reported that in Ivano-Frankivsk, authorities changed their minds about building the school for which the UOC church was demolished.
