Swedish lawmakers urge to shut down mosques spreading Islamist propaganda
The Sweden Democrats are calling for mosques that promote radical ideology to be closed, their funding cut off, and Islamists deported.
On August 4, 2026, the Sweden Democrats called on the authorities to shut down mosques where Islamism, antisemitism, and support for terrorism are preached, The European Conservative reports.
The party said that Islamism poses one of the most serious threats to democracy in Sweden. At the same time, its representatives stressed that they were referring not to Islam as a religion, but to a political ideology.
The Sweden Democrats also demanded an end to state funding for organizations that spread radical ideas. Foreign nationals involved in such activities should be prosecuted and deported, the party said.
The party backed an investigation into the extent of political Islam and religious radicalization in the country. The investigation will examine the extent of religious radicalization and how Islamist influence and infiltration are affecting society.
The politicians also called for tougher anti-terrorism laws and broader police powers to combat extremism. “Our firm opinion is that Islamism constitutes one of the greatest threats that Sweden faces in modern times,” they wrote.
