Christian woman in Canada euthanized against family’s will
An 83-year-old Canadian woman was euthanized despite her earlier refusal on Christian grounds and objections from her family.
On July 10, 2026, Brigitte Stegemann was euthanized in Canada despite objections from her family, LifeSiteNews reports.
Stegemann, 83, lived in a nursing home in Ontario and had memory and cognitive problems. Five months before her death, she was diagnosed with untreatable Stage IV stomach cancer. Her relatives say she had previously refused euthanasia because of her Christian beliefs.
However, while her granddaughter, who held power of attorney, was away, the medical team convinced Stegemann to request euthanasia or “Medical Assistance in Dying” (MAID).
During an assessment, according to the family, Stegemann was unable to answer several basic questions and showed clear, undeniable indicators of cognitive disorientation. However, a physician determined that she was capable of independently consenting to euthanasia. The day before the procedure, Stegemann and repeatedly told her granddaughter that she had made a mistake.
Besides, the family had been strictly assured that the patient would be asked for a final, explicit verbal confirmation on the day of the procedure to ensure she still wished to proceed.
Following her death, family members said safeguards intended to protect vulnerable patients had been violated and criticized the lack of transparency. In their view, the facility's staff, describing a lethal injection as merely receiving medication, exploited their patient's vulnerability, making it impossible for her to truly grasp that she was consenting to the active termination of her life.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that the French parliament had passed a law legalizing euthanasia.
