Vandals ransacked the Chapel of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Greece

In the Greek region of Attica, unknown individuals vandalized the Chapel of the Transfiguration of the Lord at a cemetery in Kalyvia, damaging icons, windows, and church furnishings.

On August 7, 2026, unknown individuals vandalized the Chapel of the Transfiguration of the Lord at a cemetery in Kalyvia in the Greek region of Attica, reports Orthodoxia News Agency.

The vandals ransacked the chapel the day after the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. According to published photographs, the perpetrators damaged icons inside the chapel, smashed windows, overturned chairs, and scattered objects throughout the premises. Traces of the destruction were also found in the altar area of the church.

The municipality described the incident as a desecration of a place of special religious and memorial significance to local residents. «There are no words to express the disrespect and wretchedness of those who desecrated the Chapel of the Transfiguration of the Savior», the statement reads.

Local authorities reported that they had already contacted the competent bodies to investigate the incident and identify those responsible for the vandalism. At the same time, the municipality intends to begin repair work to address the damage in the near future.

The statement emphasized that such actions have «no place» in the local community. The authorities promised to fully restore the chapel, noting that the residents' reverence for the shrine would prove stronger than the act of vandalism that was committed.

Previously, the SPJ reported that a vandal destroyed a statue of the Mother of God with a hammer in a Catholic church in New York.
