A procession was held on Corfu in memory of the miracle of Saint Spyridon
The faithful honored the memory of the miraculous deliverance of Corfu from the siege of Ottoman forces in 1716.

The procession was attended by clergy, numerous faithful, and representatives of state and local authorities.
During the procession, two prayers were offered: the first — at the entrance to the Old Fortress in memory of the miracle of Saint Spyridon, and the second — at the palace.
Addressing the participants, Metropolitan Nektarios of Kerkyra, a hierarch of the Greek Orthodox Church, noted that the annual procession is a continuation of a tradition that the inhabitants of Corfu have passed down from generation to generation.
«The saint, in times such as these, stood together with his people against the enslavement of this land,» said the Metropolitan. According to him, today the memory of this event calls Christians to spiritual resistance against everything directed against the faith, the Church, the Fatherland, and traditional values.
The celebrations on Corfu continue. In the evening, Vespers and an All-Night Vigil will be held, and the relics of Saint Spyridon are placed at the doors of the church for veneration by the numerous faithful and pilgrims.
According to tradition, during the Ottoman siege of Corfu in 1716, the inhabitants of the island prayed unceasingly to Saint Spyridon. On August 9, a powerful storm broke out, causing panic in the besiegers' camp. At the same time, stories spread among the Turkish soldiers of an apparition of the saint in the form of an elder carrying a burning torch, who threatened the attackers. On August 11, the Ottoman forces lifted the siege and withdrew from the island. In memory of this event, a procession with the relics of Saint Spyridon is held annually on Corfu.
