Vandals paint over altar of RCC cathedral in German city of Soest
Unknown individuals painted over a statue and altar of the Catholic Cathedral of Saint Patroklus in Germany.
In Germany, unknown individuals damaged the altar of the Catholic Cathedral of Saint Patroklus in the city of Soest (North Rhine-Westphalia). As reported by the German editorial office of the SPJ, the incident occurred on August 10, 2026, in the afternoon.
According to police, unknown individuals painted over a statue, a side altar, and an adjacent wall of the cathedral with black paint. The preliminary damage estimate is approximately 15,000 euros. The inscriptions contained no slogans or other indicators that would point to a motive for the crime, so police have so far been unable to determine who is behind the vandalism.
The spokesperson for the German Catholic Bishops' Conference, Matthias Kopp, had already warned back in 2025 about the growing number of vandalism incidents targeting churches and about the fact that the clearance rate for such crimes remains at just a few percent. According to him, in official statistics such incidents are often recorded merely as property damage, without taking into account their religious context.
The Cathedral of Saint Patroklus, parts of which date back to the Middle Ages, was severely damaged during World War II and took several years to restore. Cases of vandalism against church buildings in Germany are recorded on a regular basis, and according to Church representatives, only a small fraction of such crimes ever reach the courts.
As the SPJ reported, in July the number of vandalism incidents in churches across Europe doubled.
