To restore the 2022 population, women would need to give birth to 8 children each, – doctor

The director of the Kyiv Perinatal Center stated that to restore the population to 2022 levels, every woman would have to give birth to eight children.

On August 15, the director of the Kyiv Perinatal Center, Dmytro Hovseiev, stated that to restore the population of Ukraine to 2022 levels, every woman would have to give birth to eight children. This was reported by CENSOR.NET.

According to the doctor, given the current number of residents remaining in the country, such a birth rate would be required to restore the former demographic potential. At the same time, Hovseiev acknowledged that eight births per woman is unrealistic.

He named the return of Ukrainians who left the country after the start of the full-scale war as one of the main factors in population recovery. However, the doctor doubts that everyone will return, including young people who could form families and have children in the future.

Hovseiev also noted a sharp decline in the birth rate in Kyiv. While municipal medical institutions in the capital previously recorded up to 33,000 births per year, in 2025–2026 this figure stands at around 20,000.

In the doctor's opinion, financial payments alone are insufficient to stimulate the birth rate. The primary factor for women when deciding to have a child remains safety, as well as the availability of employment and living conditions for the family.

The Union of Orthodox Journalists previously reported that mortality in Ukraine exceeded the birth rate fourfold.
