Rescuers urge Hasidic pilgrims in Uman not to perform rituals in local quarry
The State Emergency Service warned Hasidic pilgrims in Uman about the dangers of ritual immersion in a flooded quarry that is not equipped for swimming.
On September 5, rescuers warned Hasidic pilgrims arriving in Uman for Rosh Hashanah celebrations about the dangers of performing ritual immersion in a flooded quarry. This was reported by LB.ua.
The agency noted that the body of water, where pilgrims traditionally perform the immersion ritual, is not equipped for safe swimming. Rescuers have therefore stepped up monitoring of the quarry area.
Divers from the State Emergency Service inspected the bottom of the quarry and continue to monitor the water. A boat with divers is on duty, while a permanent rescue post staffed by a medical worker has been set up on shore.
The State Emergency Service said it is prepared to respond quickly to any dangerous situations and provide pilgrims with the necessary assistance.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that the U.S. State Department urged American citizens not to travel to Uman for Rosh Hashanah.
