Papal envoy Cardinal Zuppi to visit Russia for Ukraine war talks
The Catholic cardinal will visit Russia to discuss humanitarian issues related to the war in Ukraine.
Pope Leo XIV’s special envoy, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, is planning to visit Russia in late September for talks related to the war in Ukraine, Reuters reported.
According to the cardinal, his trip to Moscow will take place at the end of this month.
Earlier, Russian presidential foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov said the Russian side planned to discuss with the papal envoy a range of humanitarian issues related to the war in Ukraine.
Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, president of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, last visited Moscow in October 2024. During that trip, the sides discussed family reunification, prisoner-of-war exchanges, and prospects for dialogue aimed at ending the war.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that Pope Leo XIV once again called for an end to the war in Ukraine.
