Poland bans entry to Lviv official over SS Galicia and UPA glorification
Polish Foreign Minister initiates entry ban on Lviv Regional Council deputy who proposed declaring 2027 the Year of the UPA.
Poland's Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has signed a statement proposing that Lviv Regional Council member Sviatoslav Sheremeta be added to the list of persons barred from entering the country for glorifying the OUN-UPA and the SS Galicia Division.
The reason for the blacklisting was the deputy's initiative to declare 2027 in Lviv Region the Year of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), its commander-in-chief Roman Shukhevych, and OUN figure Oleh Olzhych.
The head of the Polish diplomatic service also called Sheremeta a "reenactor of the Waffen-SS Division 'Galicia'" and recalled that UPA leaders, in particular Shukhevych, issued orders for deportations and mass killings of the Polish population.
The decision to glorify the UPA was adopted by the Lviv Regional Council at a plenary session, where Sheremeta, who heads the culture commission, called the leaders of nationalist formations heroes whose memory must be honored.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that an anti-UPA and Bandera rally was held in Poland after a Catholic priest's murder.
