Lionel Messi thanks God for his achievements as he ends international career
Argentine football star Lionel Messi credited God for his success as he brought his international career to a close, saying he could never have achieved so much without God's will.
Lionel Messi, one of the most successful footballers in history, has retired from Argentina's national team at the age of 39. In his farewell remarks, the soccer legend emphasized that he owes his sporting achievements to God.
The 39-year-old forward played his final match for Argentina on October 6, 2026, in Buenos Aires, where the national team defeated Benin 3–0. Messi scored one goal and provided two assists.
“I would love to play for Argentina my entire life. But I know I made the right decision. I still thank God because, without His will, I would never have achieved what I have today,” Messi said after his final international appearance.
The athlete has spoken openly about his Christian faith before. Following Argentina's World Cup victory in Qatar, he said he had firmly believed in divine help. Back in 2010, he also stated that he had no need for lucky charms or rituals, as his deep faith was more than enough.
Shortly after his farewell match, on October 23, Messi received the prestigious Princess of Asturias Award for Sports in Oviedo, Spain, becoming the first soccer player in history to receive the honor individually.
Over his career spanning more than two decades, Messi made 208 appearances for Argentina, scored 126 goals, won the Copa América twice, led his country to victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and claimed eight Ballon d'Or awards.
As reported by the UOJ, world boxing champion Vasyl Lomachenko said that all successes and talents are sent to a person by God.
