On January 19, 2024, Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece, called on the government to hold a referendum on the legalization of same-sex marriage.

Responding to the question of how he intends to address the issue of same-sex marriage and the Church's stance on it, Archbishop Ieronymos suggested conducting a referendum. He mentioned that a Synod meeting would determine the Church's stance because "in such matters, the Archbishop cannot take a stand alone, nor can the Prime Minister".

The head of the Greek Orthodox Church also stated that the legalization of same-sex marriage is a "public issue". In this regard, the Church will not "take up arms". He emphasized the Church's responsibility to inform people, urging them to think about the kind of society and family they want to have in the future.

Earlier, it was reported that the Greek authorities intended to legalize LGBT marriages despite the Church's opposition.
