Near the city of Toruń, Poland, construction has begun on a colossal statue of the Virgin Mary, standing over 55 meters tall, according to Zahid.net.
The monument will consist of a 15-meter base shaped like a crown and the statue itself, which will be over 40 meters tall. The project’s main initiator and primary investor is Polish billionaire Roman Karkosik, owner of the Boryszew company, along with his wife.
According to Karkosik, the statue is intended as a symbol of gratitude and is expected to become a new tourist attraction in the region. The project is scheduled for completion by mid-2026.
Local media note that the location for the statue was not chosen randomly, as it is situated in the municipality where the billionaire resides. Nearby is also the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows, a long-standing pilgrimage site.
Once completed, the monument will surpass the famous Christ the King statue in Świebodzin (52.5 meters including its mound) and will be taller than the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro (38.5 meters including its pedestal).
As previously reported by the UOJ, the President of Poland has stated that freedom of religion is a fundamental value of the country.
