On November 8, 2025, it became known that Christians in Syria were able to return to their homes in the village of Al-Ghassaniya for the first time in 13 years. The return became possible after the region was cleared of radical groups. This was reported by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
According to Syrian sources, a group of Christian families, many of whom had left these places at the beginning of the civil war, arrived in the village. They were welcomed by Metropolitan Athanasius of Latakia (Antiochian Orthodox Church), who conducted a solemn service at the walls of the ancient temple.
The hierarch noted that this is a historic moment for the local community, emphasizing the courage of the people who decided to return to their native land. "We have long awaited this day, and today we return to stay," said the bishop, addressing those gathered.
Christians were forced to leave Al-Ghassaniya more than ten years ago due to hostilities and the advance of radical militants, among whom ISIS structures were effectively operating in Idlib at that time.
It is noted that the residents intend to gradually restore the destroyed houses and revive their community.
Earlier, the UOJ wrote that a group of Islamists planning attacks in Paris was uncovered in France.
