On May 18, 2026, Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem held an official meeting with a delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church led by Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk, chairman of the DECR. The talks took place during the ROC representatives’ visit to Jordan for church and public events, Vima Orthodoxias reports.
At the residence in Amman, the parties discussed the most pressing issues in inter-church relations and the situation of Christian communities in the Middle East, which are currently facing serious challenges. Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad, adviser to the King of Jordan on religious and humanitarian affairs, also took part in the discussion of matters of mutual interest.
A key event of the visit was the opening ceremony of the new International Orthodox University, built at the site of the Baptism of the Lord on the Jordan River. King Abdullah II of Jordan attended the event, which church and diplomatic circles viewed as a sign of support for the Christian presence in the region and approval of initiatives aimed at interfaith dialogue.
The new university is intended to become a global platform for theological and humanitarian studies, bringing together students from the Middle East, Europe, and Africa. After the ceremony, the ROC delegation toured the complex’s infrastructure, including its classrooms and library.
Particular attention during the talks was given to the need to protect pan-Orthodox holy sites and strengthen the position of Christianity in regions affected by military and political conflicts. The parties expressed their shared conviction that preserving spiritual heritage and supporting believers are priority tasks for all Local Churches.
As the UOJ reported, the Patriarchs of Jerusalem and Armenia discussed the protection of Christians in the Holy Land. In this context, the meeting in Amman continues the line of inter-church cooperation on the security of believers and the preservation of the Christian presence in the region.
