Support for same-sex marriage and gender transition is declining in the United States, while the share of Americans who view homosexual relationships as morally acceptable is also falling. These findings emerge from an analysis of Gallup’s annual 2026 survey results.
According to the survey, support for same-sex marriage has fallen to 64 percent, its lowest level since 2019. The percentage of Americans who consider homosexual relationships morally acceptable has dropped to 62 percent – the lowest figure recorded in a decade of polling. Approval of gender transition has declined to 38 percent, down from 46 percent in 2021. The report notes that the trend reflects increasingly cautious attitudes among respondents on issues of family and sexual morality.
Researchers attribute the shift primarily to changing views among more conservative Americans. Among Republican voters, support for gender transition has fallen to just 5 percent, compared with 42 percent among independents and 60 percent among Democrats. When Gallup first asked the question in 2021, the corresponding figures were 22 percent, 48 percent, and 67 percent.
This represents a five-year decline of 17 percentage points among conservatives, 8 points among independents, and 7 points among liberals.
Against this backdrop, researchers note a growing divergence in attitudes between political groups, a trend that continues to shape public debate and influence legislative initiatives at the state level.
As previously reported by the UOJ, Donald Trump announced a proposed “Save America Act” that includes measures related to LGBT issues.
