Two Catholic bishops and a Vatican monsignor performed a ritual of worship to the pagan deity Pachamama at a conference preparing for Pope Leo's visit to Peru, scheduled for November. This was reported by Lepanto Institute.

The ritual took place at the opening of the event "Weaving Voices for Dignity," organized by the National Coordinating Committee for Human Rights of Peru in conjunction with the Episcopal Commission for Social Action and the organization "Human Rights Without Borders." A video distributed by InfoVaticana shows the Bishop of the Archdiocese of Cusco and CELAM Secretary General Lisardo Estrada, as well as Monsignor Jordi Bertomeu of the Vatican's Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, taking turns placing coca leaves into a bowl of fire before a mandala dedicated to Pachamama. The ceremony's host referred to the fire as "Grandmother" and asked her to receive the messages of the participants.

The event was held with the participation of LGBT organizations: Peruvian Senator Ruth Luque published photographs featuring a transgender flag, and one of the co-organizers — the National Coordinating Committee for Human Rights — openly supports abortion. Following the meeting, participants adopted a declaration demanding "comprehensive sex education" and LGBT rights, which they promised to present to the pontiff during his visit.

The Lepanto Institute (a research and educational organization dedicated to defending the Catholic Church from external and internal attacks) is calling for an investigation into the clergy's actions on suspicion of idolatry and heresy, as well as the immediate resignation of Monsignor Bertomeu.

As the Union of Orthodox Journalists reported, Pope Leo XIV will host a charity lunch with transgender activists.
