Supreme Court opens appellate proceedings in Korets Convent case

The Supreme Court of Ukraine has opened appellate proceedings on the complaint of the Korets Holy Trinity Women's Stavropigial Monastery against the ruling of the court of first instance, which refused to accept the convent's counterclaim against the State Service for Ethnopolitics and Freedom of Conscience, reports the DESS website.

According to court materials, DESS filed a lawsuit with the Sixth Appellate Administrative Court seeking to terminate the activities and liquidate the Korets Holy Trinity Convent.

In response, the monastery filed a counterclaim against DESS, demanding that the inaction of officials be declared unlawful, as they had neither issued the convent a legally required order to remedy violations of legislation nor sent an official written notification recognizing the organization as affiliated with a foreign religious organization.

However, on August 14, 2026, the Sixth Appellate Administrative Court refused to restore the convent's procedural deadlines and returned the counterclaim. Disagreeing with this decision, on August 28, 2026, the convent filed an appellate complaint with the highest judicial authority.

On September 22, 2026, the Supreme Court determined that the convent's appellate complaint met all procedural requirements and opened appellate proceedings.

Previously, the UOJ reported that DESS filed a lawsuit seeking the liquidation of the UOC Synodal Department for Family Affairs.
